Together, we can all plant a seed!
Can You Dig It creates opportunities for individuals of all kinds to experience participation and social inclusion through food growing.
Our gardens grow more than food,
they cultive relationships.
Through growing food, Can You Dig It (CYDI) creates opportunities for people to become included in the social fabric of their neighbourhoods . Our gardeners grow more than food, they also cultivate relationships, develop new skills and enhance local food security.
What is unique about CYDI gardens, is that each garden’s membership decides what portion of their yield and to whom, they would like to make their contribution. Some choose local food banks, on site donation boxes, mini market stands, while others choose low cost grocery stores like Quest Food Exchange. Can You Dig It was launched in 2009 by posAbilities, a non-profit Community Living Association, as an innovative way to create new opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and their neighbours through food gardening.
Our gardens welcome and thrive on diversity. They foster social inclusion, skill development, intergenerational knowledge transfer, food security and a sense of space and belonging. Perhaps most importantly, they offer all citizens the opportunity to give back, and to take on the role of civic exemplar.
CYDI is at the crossroads of food security and social inclusion - growing welcoming and inclusive communities, one garden at a time.
Since 2010, Can You Dig It has created and supported nearly 40 community gardens on public and private lands throughout the Lower Mainland, engaging over 40 partner organizations and 1,700 gardeners. To the best of our knowledge, no other project or organization has ever been directly involved with so many community gardens in British Columbia.
We support communities to transform land and create welcoming growing spaces where they can experience a deep sense of pride and belonging and pave the road for sustainability and stewardship.
In the process, people are connecting, sharing, learning and contributing to their communities, and ultimately, taking on the mission of inclusion.
We are proud to lead an initiative that connects and empowers people with different backgrounds and abilities and to create communities where everyone belongs!
Can You Dig It has been made possible through the generous support and engagement of Alexandra Neighborhood House, BC Social Venture Partners, Bluesky Properties Foundation, Building Caring Communities, Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion, City of Surrey, City of Vancouver, Disability Without Poverty Network, Don't Sweat It Services, the Innovation Venture, MOSAIC, Quest Food Exchange, Simon Fraser Society for Community Living, Shifting Growth, Stage Door, Sources Community Services, Surrey White Rock Food Action Coalition, the Urban Foundation, Urban Systems, the Vancouver Foundation, and so many more, including hundreds of amazing and brilliant gardeners!
